Pittsburgh police chief asks city agency to review his DNC speech

Pittsburgh police Chief Cameron McLay has asked the city's Office of Municipal Investigations to review his Democratic National Convention speech last week.

McLay asked for the investigation because the police union has accused him of violating the city code, which says police aren't supposed to make political statements in uniform or otherwise engage in politics.

McLay has defended his speech in Philadelphia last Tuesday, saying he avoided endorsing any political candidate or viewpoint and, rather, spoke about the need for police to improve their relations with citizens.

"The controversial officer-involved shootings since Ferguson have created great tension between police and our communities. At the same time, throughout this nation, efforts are underway to improve relationships," McLay said in his speech. "In Pittsburgh, we are doing this hard, but critical work. We have open lines of communication with our community partners."

But McLay said he needs to be accountable, so he's asked OMI and the Citizens Police Review Board to investigate the speech.

OMI and the review board each have the power to make non-binding disciplinary recommendations.
